[Movie Review] I Am Number Four

Its been quite some time since I have updated my blog. havent really had the time to check out the big screen. You might have noticed that the previous posts were by someone else. She used to be my partner blogger, but unfortunately no good deed goes unpunished. She tried to add a defamatory post on my own blog. So she wont be posting any more.

Anyways, back to the movies~

Though I couldnt visit the big screens as much as I would have liked, I did manage to catch the movie "I am Number Four"

For now I'll just leave you with a Trailer:

I found this movie very entertaining, mostly because the Trailer didnt spoil the nice bits. Unlike most trailers nowadays, the trailer for I am Number Four showed so little I just couldnt help but go and watch it. It was as I mentioned before , entertaining. Not anything like the first Transformers Movie by the same director, but still worth watching. And just so you know, I will definitely be going to catch the sequel if one does come out.

Star rating would be.. no pun intended.. FOUR

I've been to Astons Specialties at Blk 721 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 #01-2823 Stall 7 but it is in a coffeeshop. Therefore, the ambience is very much different from the restaurant in 'The Cathay'.

[Movie Review] Skyline 2010

Last Friday, Skyline premiered. And I got a chance to be one of the first to catch it in cinema.

Before i get into detail about the movie.. heres a trailer..

It all takes place in a Los Angeles high-rise where a small group of survivors brave a mysterious attack of otherworldly origins. Donald Faison is playing an entrepreneur who lures his longtime friend (Eric Balfour) to the West Coast. After a night of partying, both wake to find a strange force is swallowing humanity off the face of the earth.

Review time~

The  CG Animations used for this movie was nearly on par with that of the Transformers series. But storyline wise it is like that of maybe the Scary Movie series. There is practically NO storyline. Aliens come, humans try to fight, humans lose, humans get abducted by aliens, human soul in alien body fights with aliens and is winning. End of storyline. Its a 100minute movie and with so much potential but fails to take advantage of it. The actors didnt do a very good job, as their acting seemed very unconvincing at times. And there wasnt any explaination about what was happening in the movie. Trust me, you will enjoy the trailer more than you will enjoy the movie. And for you info, the news guy you see in the trailer doesnt appear in the movie, nor does his announcement.

However, according to some sources there will be a sequel to Skyline, which maybe will fill in the gaps and MAYBE make Skyline worth watching. But until then I think, if you want to watch a Sci-Fi/Action movie, just wait for Sony Pictures, Battle: Los Angeles.

RATING:  -NO STARS-

[Movie Review] Unstoppable 2010

Finally another Denzel film. Who doesn't love Denzel Washington?! Not once have I watched a film with him starring in it and not liked it. He only chooses roles he looks good in. His latest, "Unstoppable" .

It starts as any normal day would, a family man wakes up, and gets to work. His first day as a Train Conductor. Will Colson (Chris Pine) is paired with veteran railway engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington), and they get along just as any pair would when the veteran has to take orders from a rookie. Meanwhile, a group of students gather in preparation for their field trip. A typical day. Until a few irresponsible railway employees decide to not follow protocols. In the next few minutes a runaway train, turns from a stupid mistake into a potential national crisis. A mile long train, carrying hazardous material is running a full speed into populated areas, and with no one at the controls.

As usual, here's a trailer ~

Unstoppable, directed by Tony Scott, written by Mark Bomback and starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Based on the true events, of the unmanned train incident of 2001, Unstoppable has been said to be quite accurate to the real life incident. While predictably exaggerated for entertainment purposes they still keep to the original plot of the true event.

Don't be fooled by the trailer though, the movie itself abandons the "save the children" plot not 30 minutes into the movie. And from there on focuses on the train heading for a sharp turn in the city of Stanton. Colson a rookie conductor, slowly builds a strong bond with his locomotive engineer Barnes. While being stressed about his family issues, and being stubborn to Barnes practical knowledge of trains, Colson makes many mistakes which nearly caused their demise. But after countless corrections, he slowly starts to respects Barnes knowledge and they make a great team. Unstoppable will have your heart pounding and adrenaline rushing through your system till the last moment. It portrays how life is for veterans who even with their vast knowledge of their field, still get pushed aside, and replaced. How large cooperations make decisions to protect their revenue instead of the people, and how even in this greedy world, there are still a few pure souls who care more about others than themselves. While being an action-thriller, Unstoppable still instills many subtle notes which make it a really interesting and worthwhile film to watch.

Predictable storyline, but still breathtaking. Especially since there were nearly no CG used, which is something special for films nowadays. Many have never gotten a chance to travel by train, and Unstoppable just shows how powerful those ancient transportation modes can be. Not a family movie, but definitely a movie to watch if you get the chance.

[Movie Review] RED 2010

Being a fan of Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman, I just couldnt pass up the opportunity to watch RED.

Heres a trailer to get you started.

I'll try to give you a short synopsis of the movie without spoiling too much of it for you.

Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), is a retired government employee, he has a crush on the phone operator who handles his pension payment. And it seems like his feelings are mutual. Everything is fine, and they go about their everyday life like usual, until one day, a hit squad is sent after Frank. Things then take an interesting turn, Frank decides to fight back. Bent of protecting his crush and getting to the bottom of this attack, Frank recruits his old friends (and enemies). With them, and his unwilling yet optimistic crush, they set out to put an end to the situation.

Directed by Robert Schwentke and starring Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, John Malkovich, RED will not fail to entertain. Action packed yet retaining a humorous side, RED was a fun watch.  An awkward love story, with a large portion of danger, many twists. RED will keep you on the edge of your seat one second and send you bawling back in laughter the next. While most action movies are catered for the young and are easy to relate to (maybe), RED takes an "elder's" perspective of life. Being a young adult, seeing old people (no offence), being a part of so much action really didnt seem realistic to me, but who am I to talk, I was never an American spy, CIA or any of those like Frank was. While the movie uses a typical action-comedy plot, its interesting plot twists kept things fresh and interesting. RED won't be changing movie history, but expect it  to exceed in entertainment. All in all, I would recommend giving RED a watch, it wont leave a huge impact on your life, but it will make you weekend.
